Frequently Asked Questions

How much do tokens cost? Is there a minimum?

Token prices are based on a few things – size, quantity and if they’re single or double sided (one side engraved or both). The more tokens you buy, the less they cost per token. The order minimum is 50 and at this quantity the prices are the highest per token. 50 single sided 1.5″ round tokens will cost $38 and double sided 1.5″ round tokens fetch $75. The price per token only goes down from here. At 500 tokens the price for 1.5″ single sided rounds is around 50 cents a piece, for double sided they are around 96 cents a piece. There are even more savings at 1,000 and 5,000 quantities where they get as low as 37 cents a piece. If you need a larger quantity than 5,000, reach out to us. We’ve done orders for over 25,000 tokens in the past and no quantity will intimidate us.

One thing to note is that double sided tokens are typically double the price of single sided tokens. They introduce additional steps and require more than double the amount of work to complete.

Buying in bulk is where the best prices are. The more tokens you buy, the price per token decreases and the more you save. Large orders are what we’re good at and they’re priced to sell in bulk quantities. But we’re just as happy to take small orders.

We give the same amount of attention to every order, whether it’s for 10,000 or 50, no order gets treated any better or worse than another.

Do I have the option for single or double-sided tokens?

Yes, we offer both single and double sided tokens. Single sided tokens are laser engraved on one side and have a stained dark brown backside. Double sided tokens are laser engraved on both sides. Typically, double sided tokens are double the cost of single sided tokens as they require more than double the amount of work and time from us.

What are tokens made of?

We use quality ¼” maple ply for our tokens. They’re very strong and unbreakable, unlike 1/8″ nickels which are brittle. They’re solid to the touch and you really get the feel of something that will last for a long time.

What is the turnaround time?

The amount of time it takes to get tokens made and out the door depends on many factors. Quantity, their size, their design and whether they’re single or double sided. All of these things play a role in how long they take to complete. Double sided tokens take more than twice the amount of time that single sided tokens do. We can’t fit as many larger tokens than we can smaller ones on a single board. And of course, it’s going to take us much more time to make 1,000 of something than it is to make 100.

We do our best to get all order out the door in under 10 business days. Many get out far sooner than that. Rarely do they take longer. But all in all, how long it takes depends.

The median amount of time most orders get out the door is about a week. Remember, we’re not plucking your items off of shelves and then sending them on their way. We have to make each and every one of what is ordered. And it’s not as simple as throwing a board in a machine and pressing play.

If you’re in a rush, we’ve got you covered. If you’ve got an event coming up or need something in a not so far off date, let us know. We will bump you up in the queue if needed and make sure to get your items to you on time.

If you’re not in a rush, sit back and relax. We’re well aware of your order and are working on it. You’ll get the items in no time and you’re going to love them. We appreciate your patience.

Are there any design fees?

Nope! We love helping businesses create custom token designs that really help their brand stand out. If you have your own design – we can use that too! Just submit the design file here.

What types of files work best?

If you already have a design file made, .ai or .svg are our favorites. If you have images to submit for your design, we like .png and .jpg. We can also work with .pdf and .dxf files.

We’re looking for black and white with no shades of grey images & design files. The laser is either off or on. It engraves or it doesn’t. If you don’t have an image or file in this style, submit what you have and we’ll do our best to get it where it needs to be.

What's the Difference Between a Token, Drink Chip and a Nickel?

There is no difference between a round token, a round drink chip and a wooden nickel. They are the same thing with identical prices.

Drink chips allow you to choose a custom shape option, which slightly differs from a nickel or a round token. When you choose the custom shape option on the drink token product, it’s the same thing as the custom token product.

What are some things to keep in mind when designing a file?

If you’re working on your own design, there are some things you want to be mindful of.

  •  Text size – try to avoid super small text or text that’s condensed when you can. This is especially true for the smaller 1.5″ tokens where text can end up being very small. If it’s too small, it won’t be legible.
  • Reverse engraving – areas that aren’t engraved which are surrounded by engraved areas, we call reverse engravings. Sometimes they’re called islands. These can look great, but you should avoid thin or small areas that are reverse engraved. Too thin and they hardly show up. Reverse engraves look best when they are thick or large. Avoid thin sections.
  • If you’re using a border, give it a good amount of margin to the edge where the cut line is. We recomment at least .08″ to the edge. When you don’t give it much margin, the cut can be off center a tiny fraction of a millimeter and it will stand out, not looking centered at all. When you have enough margin, you won’t even see that tiny fraction of a mm it’s off-center. And they’ll never be perfectly centered, for many reason.

What size do you recommend for my design?

If there’s a lot of small detail or fine text in your tokens, the best way to ensure that it turns out well is to get the larger size tokens (1.75 or 2″). Small text, especially small or thin text that’s surrounded by engraving (we call this a reverse engrave), can become hard or impossible to read.

If you’re unsure what size to get, just ask us and we’ll let you know. hello@toastedmaple.com

Can I submit brand specific fonts to be used?

Absolutely – we can use any brand specific fonts that you may need, just send the .ttf or .otf file our way.

Can you color the engravings on the tokens?

We can paint the wood before engraving the tokens, and we can also use acrylic that comes in different colors. Coloring the engraved areas is very time consuming and not something we typically offer, but if it’s something you really want, shoot us a message and we can try to figure something out. hello@toastedmaple.com
